The Economic Census covers nearly all of the U.S. economy in its basic collection of establishment statistics. There also are several related programs, including statistics on minority- and women-owned businesses. The 1987 and 1992 CDs use an MS-DOS program called Extract to retrieve, display and download the data. A detailed guide is included below. |

EXTRACT Program
Both the 1987 and 1992 Economic Census CD sets use the program EXTRACT to look up and display data.
Restricting Your Search to Particular State, Catalog and File
- Restrict your entire session to a single state if you wish by hitting "r" and entering the state abbreviation.
- Choose a file or "catalog" and hit enter.
- Read the information on the screen that next comes up.
- Finally, choose the appropriate sub-file.
Looking Up and Displaying Data
The next screen will show a menu of 10 options, with the selected file in the lower right. The most heavily used ones will be 1-3, 6 and 9.- Option 1: Limit how many columns appear
- Option 2: Limit how many records appear
- Option 3: Choose/Alter labels
- Option 5: Format For Printing
- Option 8: Save ("extract") data
