Software Versions Compatible Operating Systems

The Refbook disks (13-22) include two installations, one for DOS, one for 16-bit Windows (Windows 95, 98). FolioViews has two versions, one 16-bit (Windows 95, 98) and one 32-bit (Windows NT, 2000)
NOTE: trying to run this software on current XP generates a "The win16 subsystem has insufficient resources to continue..." error message even though it supposedly works in 32-bit OSs.

Files for Making FBIS 13-22 Work

Next, for the files listed below:
  1. Replace the default drive paths with the correct drive paths in all files listed below and which precede the quarter you installed. See http://govpubs.lib.umn.edu/cd/fbis97/ for examples.
    fbisq[1-4]YY.CFG
    fbisq[1-4]YY.ICF
    fbisq[1-4]YY.IMF
    fbisq[1-4]YY.TOC
    fbisq[1-4]YY.WHL

    Drive paths below are current as of March 29, 2005:
    • fbis96q3 = H:\
    • fbis96q4 = I:\
    • fbis97q1 = J:\
    • fbis97q2 = K:\
    • fbis97q3 = N:\
    • fbis97q4 = O:\
    • fbis98q1 = P:\
    • fbis98q2 = Q:\
    • fbis98q3 = R:\
    • fbis98q4 = S:\

  2. FYI: Edits you can make to C:\FBISYY\WIN\FBIS.INI

    (e.g. fbisq396.* if you installed FBIS 14, 4th quarter 1996)
    * = quarter (1-4)
    YY = year (96-98)
    *** = extension (varies)

    1. Open that file (just double click on it & it should pop up in notepad), the first part of which will look like this:

      [Application] Title="Foreign Broadcast Information Service"
      HelpFile=C:\FBISYY\WIN\REFWIN.HLP
      Menus=&File &Edit &Search &Document &Bookmark &Configure &Windows
      Directory=C:\FBISYY\WIN
      TOC=fbisq4YY.toc fbisq3YY.toc fbisq2YY.toc fbisq1YY.toc
      Search=fbiscomb.scr fbisq4YY.scr fbisq3YY.scr fbisq2YY.scr fbisq1YY.scr
      StringFile=C:\FBISYY\WIN\strings.dll
      Collections=fbisq4YY fbisq3YY fbisq2YY fbisq1YY
      AfterSearch=1
      UseOutline=0
      FirstScreen=1
      ReflowLines=0
      Proximity=50 Limit=2000
      ImageDirectory=C:\FBISYY\WIN
      RelevanceRanking=0

    2. Editing the information about collections will keep those "insert [mo]-[mo] 19YY" boxes from popping up.
      Edit the lines TOC, Search, and Collections to reflect installed disks.
      Change the Title to "FBIS Publications - [mo] YY - [mo] YY"
      Add or delete collections as appropriate.

    3. [fbiscomb.scr]
      Collections=fbisq4YY fbisq3YY fbisq2YY fbisq1YY
      Title="FBIS Publications - Jan YY to Dec YY"

      [fbisq4YY.toc]
      Collections=fbisq4YY
      Title="OCT - DEC 19YY"

      [fbisq3YY.toc]
      Collections=fbisq3YY
      Title="JUL - SEP 19YY"

      [fbisq2YY.toc]
      Collections=fbisq2YY
      Title="APR - JUN 19YY"

      [fbisq1YY.toc]
      Collections=fbisq1YY
      Title="JAN - MAR 19YY"

    4. Save this file as FBIS.INI.
