- FBIS 13-22: Refbook for Windows 2.0; Dataware Technologies, Inc.
- FBIS 23- :FolioViews for Windows 4.2, Open Market, Inc.
The Refbook disks (13-22) include two installations, one for DOS, one for 16-bit Windows (Windows 95, 98). FolioViews has two versions, one 16-bit (Windows 95, 98) and one 32-bit (Windows NT, 2000)
NOTE: trying to run this software on current XP generates a "The win16 subsystem has insufficient resources to continue..." error message even though it supposedly works in 32-bit OSs.
- Refbook DOS installer (install.exe) works in DOS, all attempted versions of Windows from Windows 3.x to XP.
- Refbook Windows installer (setup.exe) works on all attempted versions of Windows except Windows XP. The error reads "The Win16 subsystem has insufficient resources to continue running. Click OK, close your applications, and restart your machine." Research on the error has yet to lead to solutions or a definitive diagnosis of the problem.
- FolioViews has so far installed successfully on all attempted versions of Windows.

FBIS 23- : FolioViews - Yes, for Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2
Installation is pretty fast, but requires a restart of the computer. - FBIS 13-22: Refbook for Windows 2.0: Yes.

Introduction
FBIS 23- :For disks released with FolioViews, there is no multi-disk indexing and retrieval.
FBIS 13-22
- Refbook disks have a basic flaw in their set up: they will only install to C:\FBIS[year]\WIN.
- So, in a given year, each succeeding CD overwrites many of the files of its predecessor.
Yet, once you start the software you're seemingly given multi-disk indexing and retrieval, as shown below:

- Of course, none of the searches will actually work, except for the one relevant to the CD you just installed.
- Even stranger, given the interface, is that some of the files necessary to do the searches listed above are copied over, but all are given the same CD Drive letter as the current disk, regardless of the location of the other disks.
- Also, even though some of the files in C:\FBIS[year]\WIN get overwritten, not all do. So if you try to just install the last disk of the year, you'll find some files missing completely because the last disk of the year doesn't have all the files it should.
- 1996 allows searching across disks, but there's only 2 depository disks, so you're searching Jul-Dec. 96
- 1997 works properly.
- 1998 is missing 1 file (filescomb.whi) and as a result can't do combination searching; users have to search quarter by quarter.
- You can cannot combine multiple years into a single search screen b/c several key files (strings.dll, fbiscomb.*) use the same name from year to year, but don't contain cumulative information across years.

- Regardless of whether you're using a CD tower or CD imaging software, each disk must be given a permanent drive location.
- Despite the overwriting issues, you still need to install each disk in chronological order.
Installing on Fillmore- Go to Windows Explorer; select a quarter to install
- Choose "setup.exe" ONLY
- after the first quarter for a given year is installed, the installation program will ask if you want to reuse that directory. You do.
- When you've finished each year, save the appropriate FBIS.ini file from below and change the files indicated in the next section. That's all that will be needed to make the disks go.
- Go to these directories for a modified FBIS.ini file which you should save to C:\FBIS[year]\WIN.

- Replace the default drive paths with the correct drive paths in all files listed below and which precede the quarter you installed. See http://govpubs.lib.umn.edu/cd/fbis97/ for examples.
fbisq[1-4]YY.CFG
fbisq[1-4]YY.ICF
fbisq[1-4]YY.IMF

- FYI: Edits you can make to C:\FBISYY\WIN\FBIS.INI
(e.g. fbisq396.* if you installed FBIS 14, 4th quarter 1996)
* = quarter (1-4)
YY = year (96-98)
*** = extension (varies)
