2005 - :
VirtualCD has become so widely used on campus and the number of disks to be loaded has decreased so much that our IT department configured the workstations for us. We have also dropped the html interface because the registry edits required to make it work are not possible in Windows 2000 or XP. We now use 3 different types of security software on Madison and Jefferson which does improve security, but also complicates making the occaisonal adjustment. Typical adjustments include modifying Public Browser's URL and IP lists to allow sites that we want, but whose addresses change with every click.
2003 - 2005:
- No titles added.
Through 2003:
- Create emulated CD
- Insert disc
- Open VirtualCD (VCD) 4.0
- Choose Create Virtual CD (see picture of VCD)
- Having set defaults up in advance, enter through choices
- When the copy is made, close VirtualCD windows.
- Install from the emulated CD
- Reopen VirtualCD and choose Manage Virtual CDs
- Insert emulated disc (see picture of VCD)
- Click on the virtual drive you want to put the disc in
- Eject any title already in the drive
- Click on the disc
- Click on the Insert button
- Install the disc as usual
- Open the virtual drive into which it has been inserted
- Double-Click on Setup.exe or Install.exe or similar
- Follow the prompts as appropriate
- Create VCD Shortcut
- Double-click on the VCD icon for the title
- In the Start box, enter the path to start the program
- In Working directory box, enter the working path if necessary
- Get this information from the Desktop or Start Menu Shortcut created from the installation
- Right-click on the Shortcut
- Choose Properties
- Copy contents of the Shortcut's "Target" Box to the VCD "Start" box
- Copy contents of the Shortcut's "Start In" Box to the VCD "Working Directory" box if necessary
- Click "Create Shortcut"
Note: If you want to provide desktop icons only for the discs, you can stop here. The rest of the process will create the executable links needed to embed in web pages.
- Create New File Type
- Right-click on the Shortcut
- Choose Properties
- Copy contents of the VCD Shortcut's "Target" Box
- Open Windows Explorer
- Choose View Menu > Options
- Choose the File Types tab
- Choose "New Type"
- In description of type, put "x##_title" (e.g. c01_census; means the file types will file together)
- In associated extension put ".x##" (e.g. c01)
- In content type put "application/x##" (e.g. application/c01)
- Uncheck "confirm after download"
- Choose "New Action"
- Type "Open"
- Paste target information from step 15
- Close all
- Edit the Registry entry for the new file type.
Note: This requires full privileges within the operating system. In some institutions, this may have to be done by an IT department staff person. It may also be possible/easier to wait until all file types have been created and go in and remove the "%1" all at once.
- In Windows NT 4.0,
- Go to Run on start bar
- type regedit
- find the title.x## file
- click on it to see the Shell folder
- click on Shell to see the Open folder
- click on Open to see the Command folder
- click on "Default"
- remove the "%1"
- Create the Executable Link
- Create an empty dummy file title.x##
- Make the link to the title go to the dummy file (e.g. Some Title)
