Searching Strategies and Components

This portion of the class outlines searching concepts and methods that are constant throughout all interfaces and databases, such as:

  • Quotation Marks and Multiple Boolean Operators
  • Stop Words
  • Relevance Ranking and Document Score
  • Max. Responses
  • Identification Codes
  • Query Report
  • Structural Enhancements/1,00 Pt. Documents

Searching Databases On-line via GPO Access

Over nine databases are covered. Discussion includes a brief explanation of database content, searching techniques and "helpful hints" as well as use of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. (Time is allowed for users to work independently with databases and receive individual attention if needed.)

Campus Information

Directions to Wilson Library

Parking. Lot 93 has been closed and there are no longer meters to the south of the library. Parking is available in the 21st Avenue Ramp. If two or more are driving in one car, the Car Pool lot (see map) is only $1 a day for car pools. Call 626-PARK for additional parking information.

Walking from Ramp or Car Pool lot Due to construction of the new Carlson School of Management building, the walkway from the ramp to the library is closed. You will have to walk east on 4th Street and around the Rarig Center, on the east side. (See map)

University Dining Areas within Building Complex

  • Humphrey Center. Cafeteria dining located in basement of Humphrey Center.
  • Essentials Market and Deli. Sandwiches, salads, bakery goods. Seating is located across the hall. Basement of Blegen Hall.
