Voting in the Minnesota Elections

The Minnesota Secretary of State Voting Information site provides extensive voter registration information. Frequently asked questions regarding voting in Minnesota are answered below.

Am I eligible to vote?

You may register and vote in Minnesota on the next Election Day if you:

  • will be at least 18-years-old on Election Day
  • are a citizen of the United States
  • will have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • have any felony conviction record discharged, expired, or completed
  • are not under court-ordered guardianship where a court has revoked your voting rights
  • have not been ruled legally incompetent by a court of law

How do I register?

Early voter registration ends October 14th, 2008.

The state of Minnesota allows voters to register at the polling place on Election Day. You must provide proof of residence to register at the polls. Check out the Secretary of State's Register to Vote page for more information on acceptable documents to use as proof of residence.

Special note to students: Students can register to vote at their current residence address (campus address) or their home address through absentee ballot. Check out the College Students voting in Minnesota guide for more information.
