- Define exactly the specfic variables, time periods and places you hope to find before you start, but then...
- Be flexible in your search terms; if "gdp" doesn't turn up results, try "gross domestic product".
- Be flexible in your time periods where possible. Can't find the statistics for quarterly periods? See what the annual coverage is like instead.
- Be flexible in your places where possible. Want statistics by zip code, but don't have to have them that way? Try Census Tracts instead.
- Look for buttons or links that might allow you to select by these characteristics:

. - Look for terms like "export", "output" or "save as" when you're ready to save your work:

. - Don't assume that the statistics must be out there somewhere - you'll waste time and frustrate yourself needlessly. If you aren't finding anything, email us at govref@umn.edu. We'll be glad to help you figure out what statistics you can use.
