County Business Patterns (CBP) is an annual series that provides subnational economic data by industry. CBP is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Data are provided by industry in the following economic divisions: agricultural services, forestry, and fishing; mining; construction; manufacturing; transportation and public utilities; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and services. - Economic Census 1997

Eurostat
The Eurostat website contains a mix of statistical information in PDF pages, pre-defined tables and interactive databases. The coverage varies by topic, but some data goes back at least to 1929. Zip Code Business Patterns (ZBP) presents business data summarized for nine employment-size classes by hundreds of SIC codes and about 30,000 ZIP codes nationwide.
