CBP is an annual series that provides subnational economic data by industry. CBP is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Data are provided by industry in the following economic divisions: agricultural services, forestry, and fishing; mining; construction; manufacturing; transportation and public utilities; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and services.
CBP has been published annually since 1964 and irregularly between 1946 and 1964. Initially available as print publications, it began to be published on CD-ROM in 1986 and is still available in that format. Some years are available online from both the Census Bureau and the University of Virginia.
Despite the name, online versions of CBP provide statistics at the national, state, county, metropolitan statistical area (1998-) and zip code (1994-) level. Print and CD editions include only national, state and county level statistics.
